How our Housing team helped Cesar keep his home

Our Housing Specialists deal with complex housing cases as part of our social welfare team. Here is one example of an excellent result for someone who contacted us in desperate need of help:

Background

After his relationship ended, Cesar (name changed for confidentiality) found himself without a home and became homeless. Cesar has significant mental health problems which make it challenging for him to maintain a stable living situation. As a result of these issues, Cesar fell behind on his rent payments and was at risk of losing his home. Losing his home would have had a significant impact on his already fragile mental health and would have put him back on the streets.

What we did

Our charity provided Cesar with advice and support based on the information he gave us and the information we obtained from his landlord. After obtaining all relevant income details from Cesar and receiving his consent, we initiated talks with his landlord. Through these negotiations, we were able to secure a payment proposal that Cesar could afford and maintain, while also being acceptable to the landlord.

Furthermore, we provided ongoing support to Cesar to ensure he was able to maintain his payment agreement. As a result of our efforts, the local housing authority confirmed that Cesar has been granted a secure tenancy.

The difference we made

Our charity was able to make a significant difference in Cesar's situation through a number of actions:

  1. We provided Cesar with crucial advice about his rights and responsibilities in his tenancy, helping him to better understand his situation.
  2. We spoke to Cesar's landlord to help him keep his home by making sure he could afford his rent in the long-term. This stopped the landlord from taking legal action against Cesar and helped him to keep his tenancy.
  3. We continued to support and assist Cesar in maintaining his agreement, and worked with him to ensure he fully understood his financial obligations to his tenancy.

Our ongoing support and guidance helped Cesar to stay on track and ultimately secure a secure tenancy.
