Energy Advice

Citizens Advice Gateshead provides up to date, free and impartial advice on all aspects of energy use. Whether you need information about understanding your bill, switching your provider, or making your home more efficient, we have independent information for you. If you have a more serious problem and need advice on challenging your energy provider, we also provide the National Consumer Helpline whose energy team will help you find a solution to your issue.

Tackling energy problems: the National Consumer Helpline

If you feel that you have not been treated fairly by your energy provider, you should ring the National Consumer Helpline on 03454 040506. The Consumer Service has a bank of energy experts dedicated to resolving these problems quickly and efficiently.

Understand your energy bill

If you need help understanding the way that your energy bill is presented, click here for the Citizens Advice 'Understanding Your Energy Bill' tool. This tool guides you through the different areas of an energy - including specific bills for the 'Big Six' energy companies - and explains what each section means.

Energy Comparison Tool

One of the best ways to save money is to make sure you are on the right tariff for the amount of energy you use. The Citizens Advice Energy Comparison tool allows you to see which companies could save you the most money. You just add a little information, like where you live and how much your usual bills are, and the site will show you some options for saving.

Making your home energy efficient

The Energy Redress Scheme

This project aims to provide energy advice to consumers across the North East. You can access the scheme if you:

- are aged 65 and over and have a long term health condition that may be exacerbated by living in a cold home.
- have had a stroke
- have dementia
- have respiratory disease
- have mental ill health
- are vulnerable to fuel poverty because of their household composition
- are in fuel debt or at risk of fuel debt due to having other debts or a low income

The scheme provides face-to-face advice on issues such as reducing energy costs, switching providers, fuel debt, checking your energy bills, smart meters, Warm Home Discount and many other energy-related matters.
