How we helped Sandra get the right support for her disabilities

For people with a disability, the paperwork required to access the support they need can be daunting. In this case study, one of our advisers helps Sandra to get access to the right support, in a way that she could manage.

Sandra was not a new client to us - we have been working with her to improve her budgeting and to manage her debts. Our money advice specialist realised that her disabilities should allow her to claim Personal Independence Payment (PIP) - a benefit specifically aimed at people with a  long-term physical or mental health condition or disability who find it difficult to do certain everyday tasks or get around.

Sandra asked for a digital copy of the PIP application as she thought that she could complete it with help from one of her relatives - however, this wasn't the case and she asked for our help with it. Due to pandemic restrictions, we made appointments to fill out the form over the phone, but Sandra's disabilities made this uncomfortable and it became clear that Sandra was struggling with phone appointments, with the process causing her to become anxious. We were able to make an appointment for Sandra at a local advice hub where she could be guided through completing the form - which she did successfully.

Being able to help Sandra complete the form, in a way that was comfortable to her, was a relief. She should receive the enhanced level of PIP and this will mean a financial difference of up on £152.15 per week. This money will help Sandra with her money issues and allow her to make changes in her life that will make it much more comfortable. Beyond this improvement to her wellbeing, the empowerment of being able to complete the form, in a way that removed her anxiety made Sandra exceptionally pleased, as the system had always seemed unachievable.
