How Andrew made volunteering as a student work for him

It’s Student Volunteering Week, and while we recognise the outstanding efforts of all of our volunteers year-round, we thought this week was a good time to share with you all the success story of one of our volunteers, Andrew Richardson. Andrew gives his time each Friday to support our Research & Campaigns team in their efforts. Finding time to support us in between his studies, he shared the following about his time volunteering with us:

“I started volunteering for the Duke of Edinburgh award, but it's become much more than just getting an award. It's a big honour to help in my community, especially by supporting those who need it and talking about the issues people in Gateshead face every day. Volunteering has also made me notice the world around me more, thinking about the tough problems many people deal with all the time and how different these issues can be. It's made me more understanding, helped me work better with others, and made me more responsible. I've also learned what it's like to work in an office, which is something not many experiences can show you as clearly. I've met new people, learned new things, and seen parts of life I wouldn't have otherwise. I'm really happy I started volunteering and thankful for the chance to do it. I'm excited to volunteer more in the future.”

The Research & Campaigns Coordinator, Emily Watson, reflected on Andrew’s contributions since he began volunteering with us:

“The Research and Campaigns team are fortunate to have a handful of volunteers who support us weekly. Their contributions to our projects and aims are invaluable, allowing us to gather greater insight into the problems our clients face. Since joining the team Andrew has demonstrated an immense work ethic, completing research tasks to a high standard, and showing an aptitude for learning more. We are thrilled to have him as a valuable member of the team and are excited for the projects we have lined up for the year ahead.”
