For Student Volunteering Week, we're highlighting some of our volunteers who are offering some of their time, alongside their degrees, to help support the clients of Citizens Advice Gateshead.
"Hi, I am Lauren, a webchat volunteer here at Citizens Advice Gateshead. I became a volunteer around a year ago and have been doing webchat support for around 4 months. Outside of Citizens Advice I am currently a 3rd year Law student at Northumbria University. I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Citizens Advice so far and have developed a lot more confidence since I first started.
Although dealing with clients can be stressful at times, there is an amazing support team who are always there to answer any queries you have and to keep you on the right track. I have found this experience not only rewarding for myself, but also for those who I help. There is no better feeling than knowing you have helped a client who really needs the support. Sometimes a conversation and signposting are all a client needs to put themselves at ease, as the internet can be a very overwhelming place, especially when dealing with such personal issues.
I can take a large amount of knowledge and skills away from this experience which I can use for the rest of my life. Despite doing a law degree, I feel like I have gained more knowledge on client-based interactions and general legal issues here at Citizens Advice which I am grateful for. I look forward to seeing what else my experience brings me, and further developing my confidence as I gain more experience."
