
James is the recently appointed Chair of Newcastle Business Society, and prior to this was Chief Executive of the North East England Chamber of Commerce for 15 years. He was awarded a CBE for services to business and the North East economy in the 2019 New Year’s Honours.
James is also a Non-Executive Director for Hargreaves Land, part of Hargreaves Services PLC, was Chairman of the Darlington Building Society until December 2017 and previously was Vice Chairman of the Esh Group. He spent 14 years Corporate Banking in Barclays Bank plc and 12 years soldiering in the Royal Green Jackets. He attended Harvard (USA), INSEAD (France), and Oxford University after graduating from Durham University, has an Honorary Directorate from Sunderland University and is an Honorary Fellow of the Association of International Accountants. James is also Honorary Colonel for The Rifles in the North of England, Trustee for The Foundation of Light (SAFC) and a Deputy Lieutenant for Co. Durham. He also gives time to Durham Cathedral, Sunderland University, and several other charitable organisations including Citizens Advice Gateshead.
