12 Causes at Christmas - Helping real families affected by dementia

Each year our team of skilled advisers help people who live or work in Gateshead to resolve  tens of thousands of issues. In December, we highlight 12 of those issues, illustrating what a difference being able to get impartial, free advice can have, and why we need more resources to continue to help real people with real problems find real solutions, now and into the new year.

Helping real families affected by dementia

For people with dementia, Christmas can be a challenging time of year. Routines can be disrupted, with more people visiting their homes, more times going out, and changes in food and lights. Being overwhelmed by this can cause some behaviours that challenge as they struggle to communicate how they feel to their friends and family. And for the family, the challenges of dementia may become more apparent as they spend more time with their loved one, and see the difficulties that they have. Even outside of the festive season, receiving a diagnosis of dementia can leave people unsure of the future and alone, without an idea of what to do next. However, there are many different ways to make life with dementia more manageable, if you know about them and that is where we can help.

By supporting our 12 Causes at Christmas Appeal you can help us to help real people with real problems find real solutions.

We have advisers who specialise in dementia support, and they provide much-needed support and information about dementia to people who have been diagnosed and their families. Understanding what financial support they can access, and what help is out there for people with dementia can help with planning and care. Our advisors also share their knowledge with the local community, running free training events to help spread the word. The more people know about the ways we can help people with dementia, the more we can improve the wellbeing of those with the illness.

With your support, we can help real people affected by dementia to find the support they need, whether they are the person with dementia, or the family who are learning to manage the illness. We help real people to find real, workable solutions to help them with dementia.
